MD5 Hash Generator Online
Developer & Author — Egor VolchenkoGenerate an MD5 hash from any text or string in seconds. Choose your input encoding, calculate HMAC-MD5, and copy the result in Hex or Base64 with this free online MD5 calculator.
How to Generate an MD5 Hash Online
Use this online MD5 hash generator to convert text, strings, or encoded data into an MD5 hash. The tool supports multiple input encodings, different hash output formats, and real-time MD5 calculation.
- Enter your text. Type or paste the string you want to hash into the Input text field on the left.
- Choose Input Encoding. Select UTF-8 for regular text or UTF-16LE if your data uses that encoding. For encoded binary data, choose Hex, Hex (Ignore Non-Hex Characters), or Base64. The second Hex option ignores characters outside the hexadecimal format.
- Select the output format. Under Separator, choose Hex (lower) for lowercase hexadecimal characters, Hex (UPPER) for uppercase, or Base64 to display the MD5 digest in Base64 format.
- Generate your MD5 hash. Keep Auto / Live enabled to calculate the hash automatically as you type. Alternatively, turn it off and click Run to generate the result manually.
- Copy or clear the result. The generated hash appears in the MD5 Hash output panel. Click Copy to save it to your clipboard or Clear to reset the input.
For example, entering abc with UTF-8 input encoding and Hex (lower) output produces:
900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72
Selecting Hex (UPPER) displays the same MD5 hash in uppercase:
900150983CD24FB0D6963F7D28E17F72
Generate an HMAC-MD5 Hash
To create a keyed hash, turn on Enable HMAC. Two additional settings will appear:
- HMAC Secret Key: Enter the secret key used to calculate the authentication code.
- Key Encoding (Search/Type): Choose how the secret key should be interpreted, such as UTF-8.
Enter your message in the Input text field and click Run, or leave Auto / Live enabled for automatic calculation.
Tip: MD5 hashing is case-sensitive. The strings `Hello`, `hello`, and `HELLO` produce different hashes. Extra spaces, line breaks, and input encoding also affect the result. For a standard MD5 checksum, leave Enable HMAC disabled.
MD5 Hash Generator FAQ
MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5) is a hashing algorithm that converts text, numbers, and other data into a fixed-length 128-bit hash. The result is typically displayed as a 32-character hexadecimal string, regardless of the original input size.
An MD5 hash generator produces the same hash whenever the input bytes are identical. Even a minor change, such as adding a space or changing a single character, produces a different result.
MD5 is commonly used to:
- Generate MD5 hashes from text, strings, and other data.
- Compare checksums to detect accidental file modifications.
- Work with legacy applications and databases that rely on MD5.
- Test hash values during software development.
- Verify data integrity using an existing, trusted MD5 checksum.
Originally documented in RFC 1321, MD5 remains widely recognized and is still used in older software systems. However, researchers have demonstrated practical hash collisions, making the algorithm unsuitable for modern security-sensitive applications.
Important: MD5 is no longer considered collision-resistant. According to RFC 6151, it should not be used for digital signatures, certificates, or applications where collision resistance is essential.
