How to Generate a SHA-256 Hash Online

Use this online SHA256 hash generator to convert plain text, strings, or encoded bytes into a 256-bit digest. It supports multiple input encodings, Hex and Base64 output, and live SHA-256 calculation.

  1. Enter your text. Type or paste the content into the Input text field on the left. You can hash a single word, a sentence, or a longer text string.
  2. Choose Input Encoding. Select UTF-8 for most text. Use UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE if your source uses that encoding. To hash decoded bytes, select Hex, Hex (Ignore Non-Hex Characters), or Base64.
  3. Select the output format. Under Separator, choose Hex (lower), Hex (UPPER), or Base64. These are different representations of the same SHA-256 digest.
  4. Calculate the SHA256 hash. Keep Auto / Live enabled for automatic updates, or turn it off and click Run to calculate manually.
  5. Copy or clear. Find the result in the SHA-256 Hash panel on the right. Click Copy to copy it or Clear to remove the input and start again.

For example, enter abc using UTF-8 input and Hex (lower) output. The SHA-256 hash is:

ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad

Choose Hex (UPPER) to display that same digest as BA7816BF8F01CFEA414140DE5DAE2223B00361A396177A9CB410FF61F20015AD.

Generate an HMAC-SHA256 Hash

Need a keyed hash for a webhook, API request, or message authentication check? Turn on Enable HMAC. The generator will show two additional settings:

  • HMAC Secret Key: Enter the secret key shared by the systems that need to generate and verify the HMAC.
  • Key Encoding (Search/Type): Select how that key should be interpreted, such as UTF-8, Hex, or Base64.

Add your message to Input text, then click Run or leave Auto / Live on. The result is an HMAC-SHA256 value, not a plain SHA-256 hash.

Tip: SHA-256 is case-sensitive. The strings Hello, hello, and HELLO produce different digests. Spaces, line breaks, and input encoding matter too. Turn Enable HMAC off when you need a standard SHA-256 checksum.

SHA256 Input Encoding and Output Formats

SHA-256 hashes bytes, not the appearance of characters. A UTF-8 string and the same visible text encoded as UTF-16 can produce different digests because their underlying bytes differ. In Hex and Base64 input modes, the tool decodes the supplied sequence before calculating the hash.

If two SHA256 calculators return different results, check for extra spaces, line endings, Unicode differences, and input encoding. Choosing Hex (lower), Hex (UPPER), or Base64 changes only how the resulting bytes are displayed.

Note: SHA-256 is a one-way hash function, not encryption. A hash cannot be decrypted to recover the original message.

SHA256 Hash Generator FAQ

SHA-256 (Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit) creates a fixed-length 256-bit digest from text or other data. The result is commonly shown as a 64-character hexadecimal string, regardless of input length.

A SHA256 hash generator always returns the same digest for identical input bytes. It is useful for comparing checksums, checking file or data integrity, generating content identifiers, and supporting digital-signature workflows.

SHA-256 belongs to the SHA-2 family of cryptographic hash functions and is standardized by NIST in FIPS 180-4.
