Compare Two Columns for Matches
Developer & Author —Egor VolchenkoCompare two columns to check whether entries at the same row position agree. The row by row comparison returns a numbered report with both values and a match status, making it useful for checking aligned exports.
Treat uppercase and lowercase letters as different characters.
How to use Compare Two Columns for Matches
Keep related records on the same row in both inputs to make the comparison meaningful.
Row by Row Comparison
- Paste aligned values into Insert first list and Insert second list, one value per row. Keep corresponding records at the same positions.
- Leave Case-sensitive off to ignore letter case, or select it when capitalization changes should count as differences.
- Click Compare to process the current input.
- Read Row comparisons. Each tab-separated record contains the row number, the first value, the second value, and Match or Different.
- Click Copy under the output you want to keep. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields; option selections stay as set.
Compare Apple and Banana against apple and Pear. With Case-sensitive off, row 1 is Match and row 2 is Different.
Keep the columns aligned
This comparison does not search the other column for a value in a different position. Sorting or deleting a row in one input can change every comparison below it.
Read unequal column lengths
The report continues to the end of the longer list. A row without a counterpart is Different, with an empty value on the missing side. Spaces inside or around values remain part of the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
No. This checks corresponding row positions. A whole-list comparison checks whether a value exists anywhere in the other list.
