Count rows in a pasted block of text without numbering or changing the list. Use this line counter to check the size of a column, with an option to exclude blank and whitespace-only rows.

How to use Count Rows

Choose whether blank rows belong in the total before counting.

Text Line Counter

  1. Paste the text or list into Insert text. Separate logical rows with actual line breaks.
  2. Keep Ignore empty rows selected to exclude rows that contain no text, including rows made only of spaces or tabs. Clear it to include them.
  3. Click Count to process the current input.
  4. Read Number of rows below the input. This tool returns a count rather than a separate result list.
  5. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields. It does not reset the option selections.

For First, an empty row, and Third, Number of rows is 2 with Ignore empty rows selected and 3 with it cleared.

Line breaks define logical rows

A long line that wraps visually in the textarea is still one source row. The count is based on actual line breaks rather than the width of the text box.

Blank rows and a trailing line break

With Ignore empty rows cleared, a final line break creates a final empty logical row. With the option selected, that empty row is excluded.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visual wrapping does not add a line break to the text. A logical row can wrap across several display lines and still count once.
