How to use Remove Characters from the Beginning or End

Check that each row has the same unwanted prefix or suffix length before applying a fixed character count.

Trim Row Characters

  1. Paste the rows into Insert list and set Number of characters to the count you want removed from each selected end.
  2. Select Remove characters in the beginning, Remove characters in the end, or both. The default removes two characters from the beginning.
  3. Click Execute to process the current input.
  4. Read Result. When both directions are selected, the count applies independently to each end; a row with no characters left becomes empty.
  5. Click Copy under the output you want to keep. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields; option selections stay as set.

For AB123 and CD456, set Number of characters to 2 and select only Remove characters in the beginning. Result is 123 and 456.

A fixed count is different from a marker

The tool removes a position-based number of characters regardless of their values. Use a symbol-based cut when prefix lengths vary but the same separator marks the boundary.

Short rows can become empty

A count equal to or greater than the available row length can remove the whole row. Inspect short entries before copying the result, especially when trimming both ends.

Trim the end or both ends

Select Remove characters in the end and clear Remove characters in the beginning to remove suffix characters. Select both to apply Number of characters to each end.

Frequently asked questions
