Row numbering adds sequential numbers to a pasted list without sorting its entries. Choose a dot, bracket, or space after each number to prepare a readable checklist or reference list.

How to use Row Numbering

Arrange the entries in the desired order before adding number prefixes.

Add Line Numbers

  1. Paste one item per row into Insert list. Keep the entries in the order in which you want them numbered.
  2. Under Numbering with, select Dot, Bracket, or Space. Dot is selected by default; numbering begins at 1.
  3. Click Number to process the current input.
  4. Read Result and Number of rows. Each source row receives a number and the selected separator.
  5. Click Copy under the output you want to keep. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields; option selections stay as set.

For Apple and Pear with Dot selected, Result is 1. Apple and 2. Pear. Bracket changes those prefixes to 1) and 2) .

Blank rows receive numbers too

Numbering follows every logical source row, including empty rows. Remove unwanted blanks first if every numbered item should contain text.

The output is ordinary text

The result contains literal number prefixes. It is suitable for copying into plain-text notes, but it does not create a document editor list object or detect existing numbering.
