SHA-512 Hash Generator
Developer & Author — Egor VolchenkoUse this online SHA-512 calculator to reproduce hashes, check text-based digests, or test how an application handles different input encodings.
How to Generate a SHA-512 Hash Online
A SHA-512 hash is calculated from the exact bytes of your input. Start with ordinary text and leave Enable HMAC-SHA512 off for a standard, unkeyed digest.
- Type or paste a word, string, or multiline text into Input text. Spaces and line breaks count as part of the input.
- Under Input Encoding, keep UTF-8 for regular text, or change the selector if your source uses a different supported encoding.
- Under Separator, select Hex (lower), Hex (UPPER), or Base64 for the result format.
- Use Auto / Live to update the digest as the input changes, or press Run to calculate it on demand.
- Read the value in SHA-512 Hash Result. Press Copy to copy the digest, or Clear to clear the form.
SHA-512 Output Formats
SHA-512 always produces 512 bits (64 bytes). Hex (lower) and Hex (UPPER) each display 128 hexadecimal characters; only the letter case changes. Base64 represents the same digest in a shorter, 88-character string with padding. These formats do not change the hash itself.
For example, enter abc with UTF-8, leave HMAC disabled, and choose Hex (lower). The SHA-512 result is:

Turn on Enable HMAC-SHA512 when the system you are testing expects a keyed digest rather than a plain SHA-512 hash. HMAC combines a message with a secret key, so an HMAC-SHA512 value will not match the unkeyed SHA-512 result for the same message.
After enabling the mode, supply the secret key using the HMAC options presented by the tool. The key-entry controls are not visible in the default view. Then use Auto / Live or Run and copy the value in the result panel. Matching another system requires exactly the same key bytes, message bytes, and SHA-512 HMAC algorithm.
When to Use a SHA-512 Hash Calculator
A SHA-512 checksum is useful when you already have a trusted digest to compare against, need a deterministic fingerprint of a text value, or want to check a hash produced by a library or command-line tool. This page accepts text input; it does not display a file-upload control.
SHA-512 vs. SHA-256
Both algorithms belong to the SHA-2 family. SHA-256 produces a 256-bit digest (64 hex characters); SHA-512 produces a 512-bit digest (128 hex characters). Choose whichever algorithm a protocol or application specifies. A longer digest does not automatically make an overall system safer.
A hash is not encryption and cannot be decrypted. SHA-512 alone is also too fast for secure password storage; use a purpose-built password hashing method such as Argon2id, scrypt, or bcrypt instead.
Frequently Asked Questions About SHA-512
SHA-512 is a cryptographic hash function in the SHA-2 family. It transforms input data into a fixed 512-bit message digest. The same input bytes always produce the same result, while even a small change normally produces a very different hash.
