Split a List into Columns
Developer & Author —Egor VolchenkoSplit a list into columns by separating each source row into fields. This text to columns tool places the first field in one output, the second in another, and continues up to six columns.
How to use Split a List into Columns
Keep one record per source row and choose the separator between its fields.
List Column Splitter
- Paste the rows into Insert list. Keep each source record on its own line.
- Leave Split by empty to separate whitespace-delimited items, or enter a literal separator. Clear Begin with uppercase letters if you want to preserve the original capitalization.
- Click Split to process the current input.
- Read Result — list 1 through Result — list 6. Each column holds the corresponding field from every input row; unused columns are empty.
- Click Copy under the output you want to keep. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields; option selections stay as set.
With apple red and pear green, the default first column is Apple, Pear, and the second is Red, Green.
Keep row alignment across columns
A row with fewer fields leaves an empty position in later used columns. Review all outputs together when reconstructing records in a spreadsheet.
Six fields per source row
Only the first six fields in each row are returned. This is literal delimiter splitting, not a CSV parser: quotes do not protect separators inside quoted values.
Frequently asked questions
There are six output fields, Result — list 1 through Result — list 6. Fields beyond the sixth in a source row are not returned.
