Move Words to a Column
Developer & Author —Egor VolchenkoMove words to a column to turn a passage or separated string into a vertical list. Split on whitespace by default, or supply a custom separator when the entries contain spaces.
How to use Move Words to a Column
Use whitespace for individual words or a custom separator for entries containing spaces.
Words to Lines
- Paste the source text into Insert list. It may contain spaces, line breaks, or another consistent separator.
- Leave Split by empty for whitespace splitting, or enter a literal separator. Clear Begin with uppercase letters when the original case should be preserved.
- Click Move to process the current input.
- Read Result for one split item per row and Number of rows for the item count.
- Click Copy under the output you want to keep. Use Clear where shown to clear the text fields; option selections stay as set.
With apple banana pear, an empty Split by field, and the default capitalization option, Result has three rows: Apple, Banana, and Pear.
Whitespace splitting handles more than a single space
The default separates runs of whitespace and ignores outer whitespace. This keeps repeated spaces from creating empty list items.
A custom separator keeps phrases together
A literal separator such as a semicolon can split multiword entries without breaking at their internal spaces. It is not interpreted as a regular expression or a quoted CSV format.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Put a literal separator such as a semicolon in Split by. Spaces inside each separated entry remain part of that entry.
